The first principle of my leadership philosophy is effort. I believe leaders are obligated to the highest level of effort in all of their leadership activities. This level of effort provides an example for those being led to follow. Effort is what builds many aspects presence and intellect within the Army Leadership requirements model attributes. High levels of effort during physical training build physical presence. Effort ensures resilience, because giving all-out effort means you do not quit. Requiring effort makes preparation unavoidable which builds sound judgment and expertise. Effort also develops the competencies within the leadership requirements model. The level of effort shown should inspire others outside the leader's subordinates which creates influence outside the chain of command. Effort builds trust among the organization because it displays the leader's commitment to the mission and his subordinates. Finally, effort fits within develops because it allows a leader to prepare themselves to the best of their ability.
The second principal of my leadership philosophy is accountability. Accountability means a leader is loyal to his oaths, his leaders, and his subordinates. Requiring accountability and ideals to these individuals ensures the leaders fulfill the high level of character expected of them within the Army leadership requirement model. Accountability to a leader's oath ensures they possess the the attributes professional and military bearing as an Army leader. Accountability also means a leader must ensure those he leads are accountable to himself as their leader, their oaths, and their subordinates. In order to ensure this occurs a leader must apply the leadership competency of communication. Communication ensures standards and orders are understood and responses ensure they are met.
The final principle of my leadership philosophy is decision making at the point of expertise. This means that leaders create a shared vision and end state but allow technical decisions to be made by lower level experts who see problems develop in real time. Decision making at the point of expertise ensures quicker decision making and pools the talents of the entire team instead of relying solely on the leader for decisions. This principle enables leaders to apply the attribute of intellect through mental agility created, by allowing leaders to avoid becoming decisively engaged through detailed command. Decision making at the point of expertise also contributes to the development of the leadership competencies because it develops subordinate's decision-making ability. Developing subordinate's decision-making ability allows the leader to steward the profession in creating strong new leaders within their ranks.
Successfully implementing strong effort, accountability, and decision making at the point of expertise achieves the final leadership competency of achieves. Through the application of these principles a leader can successfully get results from their organization that succeed in accomplishing their commander's intent.
